Join Leilehua Yuen in this local's-eye-view of Hawai'i Island each Wednesday in Hilo's historic Palace Theater. Through traditional chant and storytelling, music, hula, and video featurettes, Leilehua explores different facets of Hawai'i Island. Topics and films change weekly as the program revolves around the Hawaiian lunar calendar, and surprise guests and musicians often appear. A few of the past guests are Mary Ann Lim, Keoki Kahumoku, Leina'ala Lassiter, Diana Aki, and Stan Kaina. Sometimes there is hula! A 7:30 p.m.,"Na Lani 'Eha", a Hawaiian music concert with Ku'uipo Kumukahi & the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Serenaders will honor the music of King Kalakaua, Queen Lili'uokalani, Princess Likelike, and Prince Leleiohoku, known collectively as Na Lani 'Eha (The Royal Four). Their songs will be presented by Ku'uipo Kumukahi, who has been called "the sweetheart of Hawaiian music", and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Serenaders: Isaac Akuna on harmony vocals and steel guitar, Joe Winchester on 'ukulele, and James "Kimo" Stone on bass. THE 44th ANNUAL MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL - HILO
A week-long festival of cultural events including Hawaii's most prestigious hula competition at Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium. The festival begins with a Ho'olaule'a at the auditorium behind the Stadium on Easter Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with lots of music, food and fun. On Wednesday there is a free hula exhibition night at the stadium that begins at 6:30 pm; Thursday is the solo Miss Aloha Hula competition; Friday & Saturday are the group Kahiko (ancient) and Auana (modern) hula competitions. 4th ANNUAL GATHERING TO HONOR KING KALAKAUA - HILO
The gathering takes place the day of the Merrie Monarch Royal Parade in the King's summer playground, Kalakaua Park, just steps away from the parade route. From 9 a.m. Ð 3 p.m. Hawaiian historian and well-known musician Palani Vaughn will host this event that is filled with those things that Hawaii's last king, David Kalakaua so loved. The king has been credited with reviving the Hawaiian art form of hula and nicknamed the "Merrie Monarch" because he enjoyed parties and hosted many gala events and festivals. A beautiful floral parade through the heart of Kailua-Kona honoring the great Hawaiian monarch from 9-noon along Alii Drive. THE 7th ANNUAL HAWAII ISLAND SEED EXCHANGE
The Seed Exchange will take place at Bishop Museum's Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook from 8:30am to 12:30pm. This annual event is for all farmers, gardeners, and "would be" gardeners who are interested in exchanging and receiving seed, cuttings, and keiki of food crops that have been successfully grown on Hawaii Island. This yearly festival promotes the concept of "Food Self-Sufficiency" for Hawaii Island, and is a chance for farmers and gardeners to come together and share the successes of their farms & gardens with the community, to network, and to share in educational presentations. The public is invited to join the to participate in the cultural demonstrations and workshop activities in Pelekane (royal courtyard) located near the beach below Pu'ukohola Heiau with only one stipulation: that each visitor learns at least one craft before leaving the area to help preserve a part of the Hawaiian culture. Parking will be on the coral flats south of Kawaihae Harbor. More than 20 hands-on arts and craft workshops and demonstrations will be available, including lei haku, ame lei wili (ancient lei making), hana hu (making spinning tops), hana kapa kuiki (quilting), Hawaiian games, kahili (feather standards), ulanalauhala (lauhala weaving), holo wa'a (canoe rides) and more. Learn about Volcano area forests and Hawaiian cultural connections in this one-day open house. The fair features a native plant sale, hula and music performances, and educational displays about rare and endangered flora and fauna as well as about invasive plant and animal species. This annual event provides a venue for education to the public on local agriculture. Panaewa Rainforest Zoo will celebrate Namaste's 10th birthday with his traditional "ice cake", featuring 10 bone candles this year. The cake will be presented at 9:30am. The Kona Task Force on Feeding the Hungry's "Meet & Eat" program will serve their 75,000th meal at their next weekly dinner. VOLCANO VILLAGE ARTISTS STUDIO TOUR & SALE
Over Thanksgiving weekend, the Volcano Village Artists Hui hosts their 22nd annual Art Studio Tour & Sale. Visitors are invited to meet the artists in their studios, and see artworks in a variety of media. Pottery, hand blown art glass, sculpture and fiber art, as well as photographs, paintings, drawings and block prints will be on display and available for purchase. Maps to the artists' studios will be available at local businesses and galleries in Volcano Village. A special drawing for pieces contributed by the artists will held at the end of the sale. This year, as a way to give back to their community, the Hui will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the Studio Tour to the Volcano Health Collaborative. The current objective of the VHC is to obtain support and funding for the Greater Volcano Health Center, which will improve access to health care for Volcano and its neighboring communities. Join Leilehua Yuen in this local's-eye-view of Hawai'i Island each Wednesday in Hilo's historic Palace Theater. Through traditional chant and storytelling, music, hula, and video featurettes, Leilehua explores different facets of Hawai'i Island. Topics and films change weekly as the program revolves around the Hawaiian lunar calendar, and surprise guests and musicians often appear. A few of the past guests are Mary Ann Lim, Keoki Kahumoku, Leina'ala Lassiter, Diana Aki, and Stan Kaina. Sometimes there is hula!
